Benton
Feb 21, 2026 — Mar 21, 2026
Houston
William Darnell Benton, affectionately known as "Papa," was born on July 23, 1962, in Los Angeles, California, to Betty Ann Pankey and Robert Benton. He was raised in Los Angeles and later moved to Houston, Texas, in 1991, where he met and fell in love with his devoted wife, Melva. Together, they shared a life of love, support, and unwavering commitment.
William was a man of passion, sincerity, and intentional love. He expressed his devotion to his family every day and left a lasting mark on the world through his care and dedication to those around him. Known for his hard work and attention to detail, William earned the respect and admiration of everyone he served, especially during his nearly 18-year career at Star Furniture.
His journey with cancer began in April 2015, ultimately ending his career, yet he faced every challenge with courage, resilience, and faith. William's strength and perseverance serve as an enduring inspiration to all who knew him.
Beyond his professional achievements, William had a deep love for music, food—especially fried fish—fashion, and shoes, particularly Jordans. He had a remarkable sense of humor and maintained a positive outlook even in the face of life's trials.
William was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. Though he had no biological children, he fully embraced and cherished the family he was blessed with. He found immense joy in his grandchildren and treasured the time spent with them.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Melva J. Benton; children Erica Brown, Marlon Knox, Dorena Knox, Justin Knox, and Patrick Knox; siblings Annick Pankey and Angelo Harris; 18 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. William was preceded in death by his parents, Betty Ann Pankey and Robert Benton, and his sister, Pamela Pankey.
William Darnell Benton will be remembered for his loving heart, unwavering dedication, and the positive impact he had on everyone who knew him. He is deeply loved and will be profoundly missed.
