Doris Jean Shorter’s legacy of compassion, commitment, and courage will continue to live on in the hearts and minds of all who knew her
Doris Jean Shorter (née Anderson), beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend, passed away peacefully on July 7, 2026, in Houston, Texas. She was born on July 25, 1937, in Wharton, Texas, and her life of 88 years stands as a testament to strength, dignity, and devotion to those she held dear.
Doris’s early years in Wharton were marked by the strong family values instilled by her parents, R.C. and Daisy Anderson, both of whom preceded her in death. A proud member of the Anderson family, Doris grew up alongside her sister Johnnie Marie Jefferson and brother Elijah Anderson, forming bonds that would remain steadfast throughout her life.
In her adulthood, Doris married Austin Shorter, with whom she shared years of partnership until his passing. Together, they raised their son, Anthony Shorter, who survives Doris. Her devotion as a mother extended naturally into her cherished role as grandmother to Darius T. Shorter. Doris was an unwavering source of support, wisdom, and encouragement to her family, always offering her guidance and love with grace and humility.
Doris’s influence reached beyond her immediate family. She is survived by her sister Johnnie Marie Jefferson, her brother Elijah Anderson, her niece Felicia Anderson, and her nephew James Jefferson. Each had the privilege of knowing her warmth, strength of character, and dedication to family. Doris’s memory will be treasured by all who were close to her, both in kinship and in friendship. She inspired those around her by her example—steadfast in her convictions, generous with her time, and always quick to extend kindness to others.
The presence of Doris’s late parents and devoted husband is felt as her family reflects on her life and legacy. Although they have gone before her, their impact on Doris's journey and the strong ties of love they shared remain enduring.
A Viewing will be held at Blueridge Baptist Church, 9621 Chesterfield Drive, Houston, TX 77051, on Friday, July 17, 2026, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., followed immediately by the Funeral Service at 11:00 a.m. at the same church.
